Ubaya Product Management and Design students achieve a success on the 2009 National Scientific Week

Ubaya students always achieve great success when participating on competitions. This time, 2 Ubaya students namely Yonathan Limpo and Oktyawati Gunawan won trophies on the 2009 National Scientific Week. On the event that was held on Universitas Brawijaya Malang, they eliminated other 36 participants from universities nationwide. To be more precise, they won 2nd and 3rd place on Maximizing Used Goods Competition (KKBB).

The 2 Ubaya students utilized cement paper and used cardboard box to design useful products. Yonathan utilized used cardboard box to chairs and tables called 
“Mini 2 in 1 Chair and Desk”. While Oktyawati used cement paper to design handicrafts for women such as sandal, bag and other accessories.

“Well, I am pleased with their self confident. Both are 2nd semester students, but they have to compete with final semester students,” explained Guguh Sujatmiko ST, the mentor of Yonathan and Oktyawati. Guguh who was born on 28 April 1984 added,”They are 2nd semester students but possess a good imagination and intellectual. Their answers during the presentation session demonstrated their quality. On presentation session, one of the juries asked Oktyawati, the maximum weight her bag is able to carry.”

“Well, women never carry bag that is heavier that 5 kg. While all of us here know that cement paper could carry more than 5 kg cement,” responded Okky to that question.

Furthermore, one of the juries did not really believe that Yonathan’s product “Mini 2 in 1 Chair and Desk” is fully made from cardboard box material. To respond that hesitancy, Yonathan tears his product out. This SMA Rajawali Makasar proved that cardboard boxes could carry adult.

The score based on its function and economical value. The 2 Ubaya students even able to eliminate some other leading Indonesian universities such Unair and ITS. “At first, I just tried to do my best and didn’t expect to win this event,” said Okky.

“Thank you to Mr. Guguh who supervised and motivated us,” said Yonathan and Okky. “Other participants underestimated us after they know that we are 2nd semester students,” added Yonathan with smile.

“I am proud to their achievements, considering they are still 2nd semester students.
Well, self confident is their keyword to this achievement,” ended Guguh who enjoying the hobby of eating.
