Having the theme of “Copyright vs. Community, in The Age of Computer Networks“, Stallman eagerly conveyed about the current free software movement. He underlined that the number of open software users should be more. He does not use hand phone for his communication gadget because he software installed in hand phone is software proprietary.

Stallman began the discussion by describing his rationale of establishing GNU in 1983. “Existing software should be free of charge. Free software is important because there are millions of software users,” said this man with long hair.

Stallman also stressed out the necessity for Ubaya to use free software. “University should use free software because paid software breaks our freedom,” added Stallman.

Many students agree with this statement. “He understands public need. Software should be free so that the profit is not fully earned by company. Users should be able to modify the program based on their needs,” said Maria (The 2008 Ubaya Informatics Engineering student)

During the interview after the event, Stallman said,” Presentation makes me energetic. There were many good questions during the session. I am happy to be able to answer in Indonesian language,” said Stallman with smile.

Ubaya Informatics Engineering department also proud to have the opportunity invite this most well known figure in open source software. “We are very proud to be able to invite this outstanding figure. Not many universities able to invite him,” said Lisana (Head of Informatics Engineering department).
