Another outstanding achievement recorded by Ubaya students. On 25 April 2010, Ubaya manufacturing engineering department student won third place on Water Bike Contest and Race Competition 2010 held by Faculty of Marine and Naval Engineering Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember Surabaya (ITS). What makes this achievement more special is the fact that Ubaya students were able to beat many teams from Faculty of Naval and Marine Engineering on their first participation.

Green Design and Back to Nature

That’s the theme chosen by Ubaya team that consists of Michael Lawrance, Andi Idham, Dhany Setyawan, Eddo Natalion, and Teguh Raharjo. They choose that theme because they are very concerned to environment especially polluted river area. Green Design represents that their water bike are produced using recyclable materials. Back to Nature signifies their intention to integrate human and water as natural resources. Their Water Bike prototype offers 9 features compared to other products.

First: Safety

Water bike prototype is designed using buoy system that can restrain weight up to 225 kg. Using meticulous center of gravity calculation, the prototype is stable both in static and dynamic conditions.

Second: Reliability

Reliability of this product is good. This bike can be ridded in all weathers and surfaces.

Third: Manufacturability
A particular prototype will be useless if it can’t be remanufactured. Striving to design for manufacture concept, this product will be profitable if it is produced in mass.

Fourth: Integrity
Striving to “Back to Nature” concept, this prototype is intended to integrate human (i.e. biker) and nature. Water sparkling on the pedal surely makes bikers are closer to nature.

Fifth: Functionability
This water bike can be used not only as a means of transportation vehicle but also a means of refreshing by combining 2 hobbies of fishing and cycling.

Sixth: Flexibility

A reliable steering system allows high level of acceleration, making it very flexible and nimble to drive in all surfaces.

Seventh: Ergonomic
Water bike offers a transmission system that can be customized to the ability / power of the rider in pedaling the bike. Besides, adjustable seat height and position makes the product more ergonomic.

Eighth: Aesthetic
Black and gold color combination makes this product very attractive.

Ninth: Power Speed

10” diameter propeller that is combined with bevel gear transmission system makes water bike is capable of high speed.

Team Work
This achievement is due to hard work from Ubaya team chaired by Michael Lawrance. For 3 weeks, the team that is supervised by Yuwono BP, ST, MT worked very hard. They did the design and manufacturing process by themselves. Initially, the team felt inferior because they don’t really understand the ship concept. However, good team work, high spirit and support from all manufacturing engineering department members allow them to design water bike. At last, the water bike won third place on Water Bike Contest and Race Competition. Viva UBAYA
